About

  • Triton Taste is an unofficial photo + rating site for UCSD dining-hall food.
  • Photos come from UCSD students and get through the checks below before anyone else sees them.
  • Ratings are opinions. No stars means unrated, not zero.
  • Menus come from UCSD HDH’s published menus. Diet and allergen icons come from HDH too, and no icon doesn’t mean allergen-free. If you have allergies, check with dining staff.
  • Not affiliated with UCSD or HDH.

House rules

  • Yes: food from UCSD dining halls, photos you took, honest ratings and reviews.
  • No: nudity or sexual stuff, people’s faces without their OK, harassment, hate, spam, memes, non-food or off-topic photos, other people’s photos, personal info.
  • Uploading means you took the photo and it follows these rules.
  • An automatic check runs on this site’s own server. Photos it’s unsure about wait for a person to review. Uploaders with a clean track record go up faster, but a possible-nudity flag always waits.
  • There are daily upload limits. Photos that enough people report get hidden until someone looks at them.
  • See something bad? Use Report on the photo.
  • The site can remove any photo, any time.

Privacy

  • Posting photos needs an account; browsing and reporting don’t. Accounts use Google sign-in for @ucsd.edu accounts. We keep your @ucsd.edu email (private, never shown) and the username you pick. We never get your Google password, and nothing else from Google is saved. Deleting your account deletes both.
  • First-party cookies only: a device cookie, set when you upload or report, for limits and for photos this browser posted before accounts were needed, a sign-in cookie if you log in, a menu-hall cookie if you tap a hall on Menus, and one anonymous visit cookie. No ads and no third-party trackers.
  • We use that one anonymous cookie to count visits and return visits. It isn’t linked to your account or uploads, and nothing goes to third parties. If you sign in, site admins can see on which days your account was active, never what you viewed.
  • Your IP address is used for rate limits and reports.
  • Photos are re-encoded on upload, which strips location and other metadata. The automatic check runs here; photos aren’t sent to anyone else.
  • Delete any of your uploads from Account. Deleting an account deletes its photos too. Photos posted before accounts were needed belong to the browser that posted them: clearing cookies means losing the ability to delete them, so sign in there first if that matters.
  • Everything lives on the site’s server, and the site keeps backups, so deleted things can linger in older backups for a while.

Open-source notices

  • The site’s browser code includes open-source libraries. Their licenses and copyright notices are in third-party-licenses.txt.
  • HEIC/HEIF photos are converted in your browser with heic-to 1.6.6 (built from libheif 1.23.6 and libde265 1.0.16), used under the GNU Lesser General Public License 3.0. It loads as its own file, only when you pick a HEIC photo. The LGPL text is in the file above, and it builds on the GNU GPL 3.0. Source code: heic-to v1.6.6, libheif, libde265.
